Mary Plant on Aphrodite's Library 17 of July

Mary Plant explained that she will talk about her installation Aphrodite's Library, a collection of artists books and scrolls celebrating the birth, life and loves of the Goddess. Included in the library are the Anthogram Poems, a series of 'poems' written in an invented alphabet and sent to poets around the world who were asked to put them into language, to interpret them. So far I have received poems in twenty languages.

Sumi Perera's work oscillates between the vertical and horizontal plane, liberating wall hung artwork to a publicly accessible space to be handled and touched. Generally her work is available as a democratic multiple, often in the form of an artist book. By giving the viewer the opportunity to engage physically with the work, she transfers artistic control by inviting them to bring their own perceptions and experiences to the pieces. In some instances the artwork is altered by the viewer and the final authorship or editorial control of the piece is reversed.

Helen Scalway and Giulia Zaniol will present their work in the next MixMatch London meeting.
A native of Venice, Giulia Zaniol's prints tell the story of her hometown: once a powerful Marine Republic and outstanding weaving industry, today a decadent tourists attraction. Giulia was awarded of The Ardizzone Print Prize, The Clifford Chance Purchase Award and The Printmakers Council Prize in 2006. As part of “Originals 2007” Show at The Mall Gallery she also received The Birgit Skiold Award. Her etchings are in the prints collection of Victoria and Albert Museum and Clifford Chance.

Cosmopolitan cities layer together different kinds of times and distances, through the jostling of pattern and ornament from the different visual cultures which gather in cities. Using drawing practices, I'm exploring the ways in which the different conceptions of space (or world views) implied in disparate kinds of pattern, encounter and recontextualise each other to create new meanings.

Sophie Molins and Corinthe Rizvi on Digital Art

I am pleased to announce that Sophie Molins will join Corinthe Rizvi and will be presenting her work in our next MixMatch meeting, (Tuesday 3rd of April 2007, The Arts Club, Mayfair, 7pm). Sophie stated about her presenation: "I will talk about work
in progress which is a story about the kennedy space centre and a series of shoe portraits. They resemble footprints, and reveal
cracks, dirt, dust, gum, and old flakes of skin. They reference fading glamour, the power of the object, sublimation, flesh, aging and mortality. A photographic pseudo classification".

Next MixMatch meeting will take place on Tuesday 3rd of April at The Arts Club in Mayfair, 7pm. Corinthe Rizvi who works in mixed media will be presenting her latest ideas. She said that she will be presenting very new work-in-progress that explores issues around virtuality and indexicality and the veracity of the digital.

Ric Kemp will be presenting his work on Tuesday 20th of February just after Russell Chater. Ric says about his work: "my interest in analogue photography concerns the incredible sensitivity of photographic emulsion; the imagery is randomly composed within the SLR 35mm camera itself; the element of chance/synchronicity equally interests me"(see image). Next meeting will take place at The Art Club (Mayfair, 40 Dover Street, London) and will focus on Photography. Russell Chater (www.dalstonunderground.org.uk) will be presenting his work on "Post-Modern Landscapes" (see image), he says about his work: "through a variety of media, my aim is to produce works that are capable of provoking 'uncanny' readings whilst simultaneously revealing themselves and/or their construction as simple and familiar".

Dear MixMatch members, we just had a very exciting meeting. James Bacchi and Luke Skiffington gave a fantastic duo presentation on their landscape paintings and drawings. The discussion which followed was actually a REAL discussion with a nice and opinionated public. James (see his work in the picture) and Luke (check is website www.skiffington.co.uk) said that they were very pleased with the feed back they received. Personally, I thought that MixMatch is starting to make sense and getting into the direction of art forum rather then a "presentation excise". I would like to thank James and Luke, The Art Club (which offered us not only the venue and a great technical support but even tea and coffee!) and of course those who turned up. x Giulia

MixMatch third meeting will take place at:

It will focus on painting and drawings (painting by
Luke Skiffington)

This might become our permanent venue as The Arts Club
has generaously offered us the use of its meeting room.
This means that Mixmatch will not only be open to
ex Alumni of the University of the Arts
but also to professional artists members of the Art Club.
I would like to hear MixMatch members' opinion about

Moira Allen(digital art/printmaking), David Fitzgerald (digital printing)and Janet Payne (PVC based sculptures) have presented their work. The meeting has taken place at University of the Arts, Davies Street. The meeting went well, however we felt the missing of those who were involved with the ELP Xmas Show at the Menier Gallery. Thanks again to: Bex, Moira, David and Janet (my apologies for the projector problem, next time we will improve the system!).
